How to Make a Shrimp-Filled Ice Bowl

One of the most popular party hors d’oeuvres at any occasion is a big bowl of fat, juicy shrimp.

They’re especially popular during the summertime because they’re both refreshing, and full of satisfying protein. But during the summer time, they can tend to get too warm, too fast once you put them out onto your table.

I recently created a very cute solution to this party conundrum:

The Ice Bowl

I’m sure you’ve seen these at parties and been impressed. They are striking, but the best part is they’re super easy to make, and you don’t need any special equipment at all. Just tap water and some nesting bowls.

They make a great centerpiece, and you can decorate them with flowers, herbs, fruits, and/or whole spices by freezing these decorative items right into the bowl itself.

Besides shrimp or prawns, they’re great for serving ice cream or sorbet, fruit, or chilled soups.

Here’s how I made mine.

Flat Leaf Parsley
Sliced Lemons

  • Find two bowls that fit together, one should be about 3/4 of an inch smaller than the other.
  • Place the smaller bowl inside of the larger bowl, and tape the tops together so that they are flush.
  • Fill with water, insert lemons and herbs on between the bowls. Freeze overnight.
  • To unmold, take out of freezer and let stand 5 minutes.
